The demand for electrical power has increased on many ships, especially those with
diesel-electric propulsion where the supply voltage becomes too high. The supply
current becomes far too high, it is not efficient or practical to use the
common shipboard voltage supply of 440V. Modern ships, particularly
container, passenger, LNG and specialist offshore ships are built now
with high voltage generating plant and distribution system.
As per STCW Reg III/I – for officers incharge of an engineering watch and
STCW Regulation III/2, - Chief and Second Engineer Officers on ships are
to be trained to work with high voltage installations onboard merchant
ships. This course is designed to educate and trains both operational and
management level Officers and Electrical Officers / ETO on high voltage
systems.
